1. “Race Against Drugs,” by Bette Dale Moore.
This song begins with a driving rock beat that underscores kids chanting a
pledge to abstain from taking drugs. Optional solo parts combine with Choir
to deliver a strong message about the importance of staying drug-free. May
be combined with a high energy dance for added excitement. Great for any
school observing Red Ribbon Week!
2. “Positive!” by Bette Dale Moore
Divide your choir into four sections for a high energy choral spelling of
“P-O-S-I-T-V-E,” and this song will kick off with a bang! Optional short
solos woven into the piece, and a middle section utilizing two-part dramatic
“freezes” by the choir make this a number kids love to perform. The message
is loud and clear: kids who have a positive attitude have a lot more fun in
life!!
3. “Do the Math,” by Bette Dale Moore
The focus of this song is to teach kids the dangers of smoking. Lyrics are
set to music with a laid-back jazz feel and finger snaps. The “math”
involved counts up the number of minutes (over a lifetime) that a person
loses by smoking, figuring 5 minutes per cigarette. Other verses deal with
adding up the monetary cost, and the many physical problems caused by
smoking. Great for Red Ribbon Week or any emphasis on making healthy life
choices.
4. “The Snake,” by Bette Dale Moore
A gripping ballad based on an Indian legend about a man who stumbles across
a poisonous snake. Soloists with Choral backups describe how the snake, cold
and dying, convinces the man to pick give him shelter inside his coat.
Inevitably, the snake recovers from the cold and bites the man, leaving him
to die on the road. The “snake” can be drugs, gangs, poor choices . . .
educators may take the symbolism in a variety of directions. Easy-to sing
verses modulate towards the gripping climax. Choir and audience will long
remember this song! Works well in both School and Church settings.
5. “I Choose To Do What’s Right,” by Bette Dale Moore
This beautiful, but simple melody will get into the heart and soul of your
singers. Deals with the importance of staying true to your own beliefs, no
matter what your peers may say or do. Two strong melodies combine as
partner songs to create a two-part climax to the song. Suitable for School
or Church.
6. “Naturally High,” by Bette Dale Moore
Set to music with a pep band feel, this song offers a variety of ways for
kids to feel good! There is a delightful circus music interlude in the
middle where kids can show off the many ways to “get your endorphins
pumping!” Kids love to sing and act out this song . . . and elementary
audiences give it rave reviews!
7. “What You Gonna Do?” by, Bette Dale Moore
Strong percussion with a rock beat drives this number. Lyrics stress the
need for kids to set positive goals for themselves and make a plan for the
future. Partner songs are combined to create two-part harmony. Add riser
choreography and dancers for an even greater impact.
8. “RAD Rap,” by Bette Dale Moore
A strong vocal line combines with sections of rap to make this piece an
all-time favorite. This song was the first one to be written in the “Race
Against Drugs” musical. The drum beat was chosen by some awesome 5th grade
rap/break dancers, and the music was written with their help. Create your
own rap dance to go along with the power-house tune, add some gymnasts
during the final chorus, and you’ll bring the house down!
9. “Just Say No,” by Bette Dale Moore
A big band intro gets this song really swinging. A playful call/response
section between soloist and choir add an extra dimension to the performance.
Optional swing dancers may be used to add to the fun. Perfect for Red
Ribbon Week, or a great climax to any program dealing with the topic of
substance abuse: “Just say no!!”
